I joined eHarmony on the advice of a friend in Jan 2011, and paid $134 for 3 mos. I wrote up my profile & put in photos. I am an average - not gorgeous but not ugly - blonde 49-y.o woman, not overweight, employed, well-educated. Young-looking & definately above average looks & accomplishments for my age. I am divorced & share care of 2 kids.
So, I got "matched" with 200+ men by eHarmony. I looked at lots of 'em, and contacted about 25 of them. Only ONE of these ever contacted me back - and he, alas, was SOOOO conservative - definately not a match.
Do you think that any one other man on this site EVER contacted me? Nope. Not a one. Now, if a few ugly old fat farts had contacted me (and there were plenty of them), I'd think that at least eHarmony really did have their technical processes working here. But no, not one of the old fat farts, even. So I finally contacted eHarmony and asked for a refund. The answer, of course? No way. $134 down the drain - along with my time, effort & lots of negativity that happens when you keep checking and no, not one person has contacted you.
I might add that I put an ad in Craigslist and got 8 responses in a day!!!!! Yes, in one day. So forget eHarmony, folks, and go with Craigslist!!! And it's free!!!
In summary, I would not recommend eHarmony to a friend.
