Editor's Review:

Finding a partner to bring harmony into your life isn’t always easy. Whether it’s work commitments, a lack of places to go out and meet single people, you don’t seem to meet the right people, or just that you’re a little shy, online dating can help you to find your ideal match. A website which has long been regarded as one of the best is eHarmony.com.

The site has a huge catalog of members, well over 20 million in fact, and it hopes to find you a match by understanding your personality and who you might be looking for. Once you load up the page you’ll be guided through a series of questions and statements, selecting from multiple choice answers. This takes 10 to 15 minutes to finish, but the benefit is that the members suggested to you by the website are specially chosen to suit you.

The system is quite complex, utilizing research into what makes a compatible couple. After you’ve finished answering the questions, you will then be presented with your matches. There are a few important limitations for free members, which we’ll go into shortly, but the site tries not to overwhelm you with options. Rather, you are given a selection of potential matches each day, which you can then choose to ignore or retain. If you’ve paid for membership, you can then get in touch with these members and hopefully something will spark.

There are 3 kinds of membership to choose from: free, basic and TotalConnect. Free membership is (as you’ve probably guessed) free, but you cannot see your matches’ photos or communicate back and forth with them. These options become available once you’ve upgraded. Paid membership comes in a 6 or 12 month package, with longer contracts offering cheaper prices on a month by month basis.

Upgrading allows you to view photos and send messages. If you upgrade to the TotalConnect package you can also chat with other members over the phone, with the numbers kept secret so you can easily prevent someone from calling you if you’d rather not talk to them.

Becoming a TotalConnect member also allows you to complete a more extensive questionnaire and include more accurate information for your matches. This can take up to an hour if you complete the whole thing, but helps to find your ideal dates. There are also a few additional features to help you get started, such as a guided communication tool which encourages new conversations between two matched members.

If you want to find people who'll be compatible with your personality and aspirations, eHarmony offers a great opportunity to do this.

We were interested, and somewhat reassured, to find that building a maniacal profile meant you were provided with no matches. Consequently, individuals with deep emotional problems who might run the risk of harming others, are eliminated from the matching process. Whilst the website does not allow you to match for same-sex relationships, they offer a separate site for this: Compatible Partners.

Apparently, couples who meet on eHarmony.com are happier than on other matchmaking websites. They have the data to confirm it. Whilst this sounds like it could be a ploy, it would make sense that couples who both work out would tend to have things in common, whether it’s lifestyle choices, beliefs or general outlooks on life. This is undoubtedly one reason why the site is so popular and successful in making good matches. The site tends to be more focused around couples who are looking for long term relationships or life partners, but you don't need to be put off if you're not sure exactly what you're looking for yet.

Prices are competitive, particularly given the number of members you have access to, and the tools such as the live telephone chat. We would prefer to see a one month option for paid membership, and potentially a free trial period to allow you to view members’ photos and communicate a little before taking out a 6 month or 12 month contract, but you can’t have it all. A person’s membership type could also be made apparent as you browse, so you know whether or not they will be able to reply to your messages.

It’s also worth mentioning that the website is slick, easy to use and well designed. This really helps to make the experience that much more enjoyable, whilst providing you with an attractive profile to help lure in potential dates.

If you want to find people who'll be compatible with your personality and aspirations, eHarmony offers a great opportunity to do this. With in depth matchmaking features, a handful of useful communication tools and a smooth-running system, it takes the pressure out of finding a date. When it comes to a dating website which does the matchmaking for you, you’ll be hard pushed to find a more successful candidate.
